Piccadilly Peccadillos

I just opened a four year old tin of Piccadilly, from the Classic Collection, and the results of a few years’ aging are so good, I had to scribble something about it. I really like this blend in its youth, and find it an ideal English mixture for the warmer days, but after some time in the tin, it’s transformed into something remarkable.

In the tin, there’s a pleasant, aged tobacco aroma of dried apricots and nectarine, with hints of wood smoke, leather and coriander. The smoke is virginia sweet, elegant, and refined. It stimulates the palate without being intrusive, and truly is a wonderful companion to the morning tea. Originally, I only half-jokingly referred to it as the perfect “English Breakfast Mixture.” In retrospect, I hit that nail quite squarely on the head!

A “peccadillo” is a small sin, and this old tin of Piccadilly really is sinfully good.

A New Look

The other day, I was looking over the site, and realized just how badly it was in need of a serious face-lift. The pages weren’t consistent, and the overall presentation just wasn’t up to contemporary standards, not to mention the fact that some of the text were just bloody difficult to read.

So, I went to work. I changed the styling of the Chronicles and News pages a little first, and then applied the same design cues to the most of the rest of the site. The overhaul is not quite complete, yet; there are still a few features that need some attention, but they’ll come in time. I’ve also added some additional content in some places, and updated the page for the 2008 calendar. Pfew…

I hope you like the new look as much as I do. There are a couple of old features missing, but it’s only temporary. They’ll be back. If you’ve got links to pipe reviews and so on, they’ll continue to work, at least for now, and all the collection pages are still on-line. I had NO idea how large the site had become over the past 8 years! But, rest assured, I’m working on it…

Now, for those who have lobbed their guesses into the court as to what I’m working on, I’m not throwing any bones. It will remain my little secret until it’s close to completion. Ain’t I evil?

Keeping the Pressure Up

The RTDA has provided a simple way to let your elected representatives know how you feel about increased taxes on cigars and pipe tobaccos. Clicking on this link will take you to a page where you can enter your zip code, and compose a brief letter, either from the talking points provided, or from your own thoughts, to the president, your congress person and senators.

Most of us lead busy lives, I realize, and have precious little time to spend writing letters to let our elect how we feel. This only takes a few minutes, and will let them know that we are informed, that we are at least somewhat organized, that we are watching, and that we’re already paying a high enough price, “For the children.”

New Stuff under Development

I’m frequently asked if I can recreate some old tobacco or other. I’ve usually said no, for a variety of reasons. However, given how things went with Westminster, and the wonderful reception the blend has received since I released it in January, I’ve decided to have a go at another classic old blend that is no longer available. No hints.

Okay, one hint. It’ll have Latakia in it, and plenty of it. Okay, one more. The original does not have Balkan in the title. But, that’s all I’m saying until I get much, much closer to the final result. Don’t even ask. BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! (I’m working hard towards my Evil Genius merit badge. This sort of little tease is one of the requirements, or so my mentor tells me.)
